Nigeria’s refinery sector: Navigating challenges, renewed commitments

Embedded in the heart of Nigeria’s energy sector, refineries emerge as vital keystones, integral to satisfying the nation’s insatiable appetite for domestic fuel.

The Port Harcourt Refinery Complex (PHRC), Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), Kaduna Refinery and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), and Eleme Petrochemical Company Limited (EPCL) are four refineries that face different challenges. These range from complex operations to periodic shutdowns caused by underinvestment, maintenance errors, and the spectre of corruption.

The Refinery Landscape: A Closer Examination

With the capability to refine 210,000 barrels per day (bpd) and produce a wide range of products, the PHRC is a towering figure within this complex network.

With an emphasis on producing a variety of petrochemicals, its petrochemical counterpart (PPC) augments this output. Nevertheless, the PHRC deals with problems related to operations, closures, and the effects of corruption and underinvestment.

The WRPC, with a refining capability of 125,000 bpd, is located in the centre of Delta State. Nevertheless, regular outages and ineffective operations have obscured its potential, emulating the problems besetting other refineries around Nigeria.
